Stones Throw’s Sonic Guide to Kyoto

The indie record label on their favorite pit stops.

Stones Throw’s Sonic Guide to Kyoto

Stones Throw Records is a West Coast child of the ’90s, unbending enthusiasm for vinyl still intact. (You can guess why we’re friends.) The LA-based label — once home to J Dilla, MF Doom and Madlib — is revered for its genre-bending releases, artist-focused philosophy and worship of wax, which has helped it make waves amid Japan’s vinyl culture renaissance.

We recently welcomed Stones Throw-signed producer Knxwledge (half of Grammy Award-winning NxWorries, pictured above) to Ace Hotel Kyoto for his first-ever live show there. It got us wondering where these champion crate-diggers send their artists who stop by on tour. Thankfully Kota Yoshioka, label manager for Japan and Asia, had answers.

Below, Stone Throw’s favorite sonic pitstops in the Capitol of Peace and Tranquility.

Jet Set Records Shop

Jet Set Records
A cornerstone of Kyoto’s independent record culture, Jet Set Records is known for its strong focus on new releases from around the world, spanning a wide range of genres including hip-hop, soul, house and Japanese classics. Their carefully curated selection consistently includes Stones Throw releases, making it a key retail partner in the region. The shop’s welcoming atmosphere encourages both dedicated crate diggers and casual discovery.

Jazzy Sport Kyoto
Part record store, part community hub, Jazzy Sport Kyoto connects music, original apparel and culture under one roof. With strong roots in hip-hop, jazz and soulful beats, the shop regularly supports Stones Throw releases and artists. Its energetic, community-driven vibe reflects Kyoto’s modern underground scene, often hosting in-store sessions and events.

Inside Meditations store where there are a lot of various music records.

Meditations
Meditations is a globally respected hub for experimental, ambient and leftfield music, attracting listeners with a more exploratory ear. Known for its highly selective curation and international reach, the store occasionally carries Stones Throw titles that align with its boundary-pushing sensibility. Its quiet, gallery-like space offers a deeply focused listening experience.

Club Metro
Located beneath a subway line, Club Metro is one of Kyoto’s most iconic underground venues, known for its raw energy and diverse programming. The space has hosted select Stones Throw artists over the years, serving as a touchpoint for tours and local collaborations. Its intimate yet lively dance floor continues to shape Kyoto’s nightlife and live music culture.

Kiyomizu-dera
Bonus: One of Kyoto’s most iconic temples, Kiyomizu-dera offers sweeping views of the city alongside its historic wooden stage and hillside setting. On tour, it’s a place we often bring visiting Stones Throw artists on their day off — an opportunity to slow down and experience Kyoto’s cultural depth. Located within reach of several record stores, it pairs naturally with a day of exploring the city.

Packing List: Madison Cunningham

Joan Didion authored many American classics — her shortest: a packing list published in 1979. The list, from her collection The White Album, was kept taped to the door of her Hollywood apartment closet for utilization at a moment’s notice. A tidy catalog of things that includes both stockings and bourbon, we often turn to Joan when staring down an empty suitcase. All this to say, we’re excited to introduce Packing List — a new Reader feature chronicling the tried-and-true travel companions of the wayfarers we know and love. Singer-songwriter Madison Cunningham kicks off the series as she tours in support of her fourth studio album, Ace (a coincidence, we swear).

Flo Dill’s Guide to Sydney

It was Londoner Flo Dill’s first time in Sydney, and she came with notes. “Like everyone, I ask friends who’ve been there before — but I try to get just two or three top things,” the NTS Breakfast Show host says. She’d come to romance Ace Sydney’s Lobby with her signature blend of leftfield pop and feather-light rock, and to try out a new way to travel. “I’m trying to free myself from the tyranny of Google Maps and just go where it feels good.” Her hot take: “Not every meal needs to be life changing.”  Alongside friends, Flo also polled her devoted NTS listeners for their can’t-miss spots, which is how she discovered the gem that is Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden — right at home on her outdoorsy-leaning list.

Greek Visions Finds Meaning in Incoherence

“It’s an incoherent archive of contemporary Greek culture,” says Greek Visions founder Takis Zontiros. What began as an Instagram account cataloguing movements and moments in Greece’s past and recent present — 1970s to 2010s — grew long, curious arms. Greek Visions resembles a virtual museum preserving the minute and monumental of the country’s cultural identity, its reach now spanning a popular Instagram account, regular merch drops and a Substack. Newly notched in the brand’s résumé — curator of the in-room vinyl at Ace Hotel & Swim Club Athens (hear a preview here) and collaborator on an apparel collection that revives the decadence of Greek discotheques.
